Rally
Manjula
Barku Shigva was a Tribal girl from Karjat, Maharashtra, India. . She was one
of the very first girl in the Good Shepherd Boarding at Karjat who came to us
at the age of seven. She completed her 10th grade and then moved on
to another boarding for Tribals where she completed her 12th grade. She is 19
years old and is the only girl, who has completed 12th grade from her village.
From April 2013 she was getting trained in a 3 months basic computer course at
Karjat and was staying with her parents. She was a bright and determined child.
As usual on the 16th of July 2013 Manjula attended the class along with her
friend Meena. On her way back she went to the market to purchase some
vegetables to take home. Yeshwant Namdev a
man from the neighbouring village known to her who was riding a two wheeler
offered to drop her at her house. As
soon as she sat on his bike he changed the route, drove very fast and took her
to a very lonely area. He tried to rape her but she resisted so he killed her
brutally. Her body was found on 24th
July at 11 a.m. after 9 days of search. Yeshwant Namdev had smashed her face with a stone
and the body was in a decomposed stage.
It was a heartbreaking seen to see the body of Manjula. Her parents are
very poor and unable to follow the case.
Usually
in the villages whatever happens, no one takes seriously. This girl was raped
and murdered, if it was done in any city side, so much of noise could have
made. Since this girl was poor and tribal no one took seriously. We Good
Shepherd Sisters thought, if we keep quite the culprit will come out soon and
many others also takes chance. To make
this case strong and to create an awareness among the people what happened in
this village and what is happening in our country, we organized a rally on 31st
August. All the Raigad NGO’s, school students, teachers, social workers ,
village women, men, youth and some of the members from AMART was part of this
rally. We began the rally from Chowk, where she was picked up by the man went
through the market and went to her village, shouting slogans asking justice
for Manjula and give a serious
punishment to her killer. We also made aware that the rights of women and
girls. We had a public gathering in the
village where this man’s house is. People from this village too joined for the
public gathering. Our parish priest Fr. Clatius who is a lawyer spoke very
well, and assured her parents that we will be with them till the end of this
case. Good Shepherd Sister Pushpa who is
also a lawyer addressed the gathering
and told the people to be united in the village and fight for the justice.
Whenever this sort of incidence takes place to report to police to avoid worse
things happening. This rally was a
successful one to create awareness. Manjula’s mother and grandmother too spoke
to the crowd asking for the justice to be done to their daughter. We need to go
long to get justice for this girl.
